The Review

She…

She is Mae Hawkins. Born out of wedlock, her mother is forced to run a brothel in Virginia. Mae grows up in this atmosphere but remains chaste and later takes up the running of the brothel. She is brought up by a loving lady and her daughter. Though she is a very tough businesswoman but when Captain John McLain comes to her brothel, hurt and feverish- she goes out of her way to cure him.

He is Captain John McLain. After he meets Mae, he is very much attracted to her. But then there are two things which stands in his way… her profession and his amputation.

The Story….

Set up in the Texan background, this story brings alive the rough terrain of Texas. Mae travels from Virginia to Texas along with John to meet the man who had fathered her. They fall in love along the way but due to Mae’s profession first and then due to the amputation of his left leg,John holds back. In the meantime , he comes to know that a previous love affair has left him with a son.

Mae takes on his son and falls in love with the small boy as if he was his own. The three of them have everything going great for them except John’s stubbornness.

Reasoning…

The reason why I am taking a star away is due to the fact that I found the conflict of the story a bit mild. The characters are well written and Mae is really strong and beautiful woman. Even if she is from the brothel , her dignity and mannerisms will captivate the readers. My lukewarm reaction was for John’s pigheadedness. He was a bit too confused and from the position he was in, he should not be he one cribbing about Mae. He got the better deal.

I suppose I am championing Mae in this story. J
