Review

I was not prepared to like this short novel of hundred and one pages. How can a short story do full justice to a subject such as adultery was beyond my sensibility. In fact, when I got this book for review, I was a bit skeptical. The title of the story, ‘Indiscretion’ caused my over active imagingation to imagine lucid love making scenes and with great apprehension, I clicked on my Kindle.

And I am glad I did!

The story is about adultry no doubt, but the treatment given to this story is wonderful.

Elisa 'slips' one night and that too with her husband's friend - Carson. Rather than continue having an affair, she puts an end to it. However, the night leaves its own consequences. A child growing in her womb!

Both Carson and Elisa are in a situation where such a leak would ruin not only their respective career but also their marital life. Even if Carson is ready for this but Elisa is not. She did not want to play a second fiddle in Carson's life. They both decide that it would be make Elisa's husband believe that the child is his. But there was only one obstacle to this problem. Elisa had no relationship with her husband for the past few months!

So, now would this problem be solved? There is so much I could add here. However, I am sure Dahlia will not appreciate a spoiler, even if my fingers are itching to type the consequences. Well thought of Dahlia!

So to find out how it is solved read this book of course. Hint? Ok a teeny weeny one..... psst... there is a murder involved. [Fingers goes to chopping board.... naughty fingers!]

Reasoning

1) The relationship between Elisa and her husband is not explored fully. It is not clear what they felt for each other, at least from Elisa's point of view.

2) Carson has been detected as a womanizer. So, why would he go out of his way to be with Elisa? Was it love out just lust?

3) Elisa and Carson's relationship is a bit cold after their initial 'meet'. Almost businesslike! Maybe, as a woman I need more reasons to understand why Elisa did what she did.

Recommendation: Definitely.A wonderful read for a snowy night…

1. The story behind the creation of Indiscretion.

Thank you so much for having me, Rubina. I know that I keep telling you how much I appreciate the opportunity because I really do! To answer the question, Indiscretion was originally a short story I wrote for a creative writing class. It was about choices. A woman is propositioned to spend time with a man. The woman is aware of his reputation and knows that his request is not just for an innocent dinner. She also knows that he's been watching her. So, she's faced with a choice whether to stay or go. She decides to go. The original story was about two pages. However, after I submitted the piece, I just started thinking of all that could go wrong because of this decision and after I was done with the class, I decided to make the story longer.

2. One thing I couldn't understand is why Elisa had to do what she did. What was the main motive behind her action? 

The thing is, she didn't have to do it. She could've walked away and went on about her business. In the beginning of the story, she had a few opportunities to exit stage left. However, she willingly made the decision to sleep with a married man who happened to be a good friend of her husband. [Of course, had she walked away, the story would've ended ;-) ]

In all seriousness, her main motive was primarily lust. Loneliness and a need to have the attention she felt she was missing at home closely behind it.

3. The ending :) was not foreseen. Suppose you could change it would you have? (*Winking) 

No, I wouldn't have. It just felt right to end it the way I did.

4. Do you feel that Elisa got what she deserved more than what she deserved? If yes, I am not trying to condone the action? Isn't 'to each his own' more in fashion? 

When people make bad decisions, especially when motivated by wanting to meet their own selfish needs, there's going to be some kind of consequences or repercussions. The extent of the consequences vary. This story was just one example of everything possible going wrong because of a bad choice motivated by lust.

5. What does Dahlia do when Dahlia does not write? (By the way, a beautiful name) 

Thank you! When I'm not writing, I'm either at my day job, at school in the evening, or being wife and mommy all the time. Believe or not, I do manage to sleep (a little).

6. Carson: just boredom and lust was the motive? How much planning was required to create these characters? 

For the most part, lust was his motive. He's the kind of man who is just used to getting what he wants by any means necessary without much thought for the consequences.

Not much planning was required to create the characters. We're surrounded by all types of political scandals dealing with affairs, corruption, and the like. Carson happened to be modeled after the politicians who are extremely cocky and believe that they could talk or charm their way into whatever they wanted or out of anything. As for Elisa, I just thought of women who were very much aware of their beauty and sexiness and therefore can be brazen and bold.

7. Adultery is a very strong emotion behind many crimes. Do you feel that it should bear the consequences? 

Absolutely, adultery is a motivator and the emotion behind horrible decisions that can lead to many crimes. So is lust.  Adultery, just by its nature of breaking something that is sacred, will always have consequences. And lust in general, that desire for something that is not yours (not always another person, it could money or material possessions and whatnot) can also lead to some pretty disastrous consequences.

8. If there is one advise besides 'keep on writing' that the new writers need to follow what would it be? 

Partner up with a good editor. Indie writers sometimes make the mistake of trying to edit their own work, which is something I do believe we should do in order to get the manuscript as clean as possible. However, once the writer has cleaned up that manuscript to the best of his/her ability, send it over to a knowledgeable editor. He or she often sees things a writer cannot and can help mold the story into the best work possible. Trust me, the investment is worth it.

That my Dear Dahlia is the BEST advice a indie writer can get. My sincere advice to all my indie-writer friends. Don't do the mistake to thinking that YOU can EDIT YOUR own work. You can't. Thanks Dahlia. Lovely net chatting with you. :)
